Republicans in California are accusing the Democrat attorney general, Rob Bonta, of deliberate election rigging with his manipulation of the title of a constitutional amendment pending in this year’s election.

What he did was manufacture a title for the amendment that is negative, and likely to draw opposition, whereas the original was a positive on an issue that the vast majority of voters endorse: election integrity.

The original title said: “Establishes additional voter identification and citizenship verification requirements. Initiative constitutional amendment.”

That’s an idea that across America vast majorities of voters, of all parties, endorse.

He turned it into something bad: “Prohibits citizens from voting unless they present government-issued identification. Initiative constitutional amendment.”

Carl DeMaio, a California assemblyman and Republican, delivered the verdict on the scheme:

“The ballot title is being manipulated to try to encourage people to vote no, to scare voters away. They’re trying to falsely claim that citizens would be prohibited from voting. It is so illegitimate. It is so corrupt. It is so dishonest what this attorney general has decided to do, because he does not support this initiative.”

Social media commenters called out the evidence of election-rigging from Bonta:

“Sue him! Haven’t Republicans learn0ed the lawfare Democrats play? Get an injunction on the change.”

“CA politicians attempting to confuse voters… again.”

“@AGRobBonta is scummy. We taxpayers need to sue. Might as well sue him since he loves to use our own taxpayer money suing Trump.”

“BREAKING: Attorney General Rob Bonta Just RIGGED and MANIPULATED the Voter ID Initiative on the November Ballot Rob Bonta changed the official language of the Voter ID initiative (Prop 39) in the middle of the election season. This language had been approved for over a year.”

“Blatant rigging. These ppl have no shame. They think they’re untouchable.”

“The new title is blatantly false. Every Register of Voters allows provisional votes. Anybody can vote. But if you want your vote counted, you need to have ID and be registered to vote in advance of the election. And that ID can’t be a gym membership.”

“California Democrat party and officials will lie, cheat and steal to stay in power and will use any tactic to pass the most ridiculous laws in the country. It’s no lie to call this state the The Socialist State of California.”

“The California AG, at his own discretion and without any oversight, just renamed the Voter ID initiative on the California ballot for the purpose of confusing voters in an attempt to rig the election. Explain to me how this isn’t election interference.”

“That’s a blatant manipulation to scare people into voting No!”

Watch a report:

A report at the Gateway Pundit explained Proposition 39 made its way to California’s 2026 ballot and would require voters to prove citizenship when registering to vote.

The report said, “Under current law, when registering to vote, individuals must state under penalty of perjury that they are United States citizens and provide information to verify their identity (e.g., birthdate, driver’s license or Social Security number). This measure would amend the California Constitution to further require that: – list voters present government-issued identification at the polls or the last four digits of a government-issued identification number when voting by mail; – the State provide voter identification cards on request; and – elections officials annually report percentage of each county’s voters whose citizenship they have verified.”

Besides the title change, Bonta now insists on claiming to voters the change: “– Prohibits voting by mail unless voter designates a government-issued identification number for their voter registration. – Invalidates mail ballots if envelope does not include last four digits of government-issued identification number matching the number designated in the voter’s registration (e.g., if voter designates Social Security number for registration, but provides driver’s license number on envelope, their ballot would not count). – Prohibits voting in person without presenting government-issued identification. – Requires elections officials to annually report percentage of each county’s voters whose citizenship status they have verified.”

The report explains, “With just months to go until the November election, Bonta made radical changes to the ballot initiative’s title and wording in an effort to destroy the measure.”
