President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is nominating acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to lead the Department of Justice on a permanent basis.
Blanche became acting Attorney General after Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi in April. White House Deputy chief of staff, Dan Scavino, posted a video on X Wednesday night of Trump announcing the news at a private event at the White House.
“Tomorrow I’m instructing Dan and everybody else that’s involved in the very complicated process, which is going to be, I think, very quickly, that we are going to make him permanent Attorney General,” Trump said referring to Blanche.
Trump fired Bondi after she came under scrutiny for department’s handling of the Epstein files. Trump later appointed Bondi to serve on the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology after outlets reported she was battling cancer.
Blanche could have remained acting attorney general until October, since he had 210 days to serve in the position, according to the New York Post. In order for Blanche to permanently lead the DOJ, the Senate will have to confirm him.
During his time at the department, Trump has signed off on the creation of the anti-weaponization fund and played a role in the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey on charges of threatening to kill the president.
Blanche announced Tuesday that the Trump administration was dropping the DOJ’s anti-weaponization fund.
The new Attorney General entered the Trump administration after first being his personal attorney, according to NBC.
