Gov. Gavin Newsom can’t say President Trump hasn’t given him anything after receiving a slew of “Trump 2028” baseball caps in the mail.

The Californian says the gag gift suggests that Mr. Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to remain in office after his term ends in January 2029.

“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” Mr. Newsom said at a Politico forum Wednesday in Sacramento. “I have two dozen ’Trump 2028’ hats his folks keep sending me.”

The governor said Mr. Trump tried to “light Democracy on fire” after he lost to Joseph R. Biden in the 2020 election and said the president is now trying to do the same by leaning on GOP leaders to gerrymander congressional maps in red states.

“People actually think this guy is serious about having another election,” Mr. Newsom said. “You think he is joking about 2028?”

Mr. Newsom has emerged as an early favorite in the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination race.

He’s putting his political capital behind an effort to redraw the state’s congressional maps to offset the Texas GOP’s redistricting, which will help Republicans gain five seats in the midterms.

Mr. Newsom spent roughly an hour on stage in Sacramento chastising Mr. Trump, describing him as the “most destructive and damaging individual” he has known in his lifetime.

He warned that the president is undermining the nation’s democracy, shaking down universities, weeding out independent thinking and replacing the rule of law with the “rule of Don.”

“Wake up, everybody,” Mr. Newsom said. “Wake up.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has kept a collection of his favorite hats at the White House. His team recently snapped a photo of him showing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron a red “4 More Years” baseball cap.

Just above that was a version of the “Trump 2028” hat.
