Rand Paul says four Republicans could ‘dramatically change’ Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) signaled Tuesday that four Republican senators will be working to improve what he referred to as the current “weak” and “anemic” spending cuts to the Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

Paul is not the only critic of the tax legislation. Republican senators have scrutinized it for costing some $400 billion in tax cuts. Sens. Mike Lee (R-UT), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Rick Scott (R-FL) also oppose it as it was passed in the House.

“The spending cuts are weak, they’re anemic, and they need to do more. Nothing in the bill changes the course of the accumulation of debt,” Paul said Tuesday on CNBC’s SquawkBox. “We’re accumulating about $2 trillion in debt every year. That’s ongoing, and the bill will not materially change the direction of the accumulation of debt.”

The Big, Beautiful Bill Act centers on mandatory government spending. The possible rescissions bill would cut discretionary spending.

The Kentucky senator suggested that “all it takes is those four” aforementioned senators to push for change to the bill, as the Republican Party has a four-seat majority in the chamber.
