More than 1,000 Democrats gathered in a black Memphis mega-church last night to hear the pastor say that Jesus was a socialist. The pastor said the Bible calls for Christians to be socialists and the audience cheered. This was a rally hosted by New Direction Christian Church in Memphis with State Rep. Justin Pearson and AOC and other members of The Squad.

The truth is that black pastors and predominantly black churches have mobilized and are engaged in the political process in Memphis and across the nation. They are committed to electing radical Democrats. Not all, mind you, but most.

That’s one of the reasons why Republicans don’t win elections in places like Memphis. They don’t realize they are not only running against the candidates, but also the black pastors.

Republican candidates are shunned by most of the white churches and white pastors across the nation, while black churches openly embrace Democrat candidates.

By and large the white church community has opted to completely avoid the cultural issues that plague our community. Instead of salt and light – they have serve a sodium-free message.

Again, not all white churches – but most.

This is not about turning your Sunday service into a political arena. But it is teaching what the Bible says about the big issues of our day. It is talking about the issues that are impacting our community and our schools and our families. It’s about teaching Christians how to vote their values at the ballot box. And it’s also about informing our elected leaders what we expect from them as Christian citizens.

I suspect many preachers and churches in the Mid-South have been bullied into silence. They are afraid of the criticism that might come by sharing what the Bible says about a culture issue.

I contend that our community has suffered because so many churches that have heavily conservative congregations have disengaged from the debate. They have opted out.

I suspect many will disagree with this philosophy – but take a long hard look at what has happened in Memphis over the past 20 decades. Take a long look at the moral rot and cultural decay.

The pastoral silence on the big issues of the day contributed in part to the city become the most dangerous and the most deadly city in America. The silence turned out a generation of children who can’t read at grade level. The silence has driven thousands of citizens to pack up and leave our city.

If only our churches had the courage of President Trump. The man saw what was happening in Memphis and immediately took action. He didn’t care what folks down at the country club were going to think. He took a stand – regardless of the cost.

I think back to the Sunday after Charlie Kirk was murdered. Many churches across the nation were filled with distraught young people searching for answers. In many cases, all they got was the pre-prepared sermon.

There is a moment to fix what is broken in our city. The answers are in the Bible. The church is the mechanism to mend hearts and families and our city.

Politics is all about narratives. On a Friday night more than 1,000 people filled a church to hear the preacher call Jesus a socialist. It was a near-standing-room-only crowd. How many of our megachurch pastors will be preaching to standing-room-only crowds on Sunday?

All that to say, it’s not about telling the congregation to vote Democrat or Republican. It’s not about black or white. This is about teaching Christians to vote their values.
