A New York City casting agency is raising eyebrows after they announced auditions for the hit Broadway show “Hamilton” would only be open to non-white actors and performers.

“Seeking BIPOC performers,” the announcement read, referring to Black Indigenous and People of Color. In other words, white people need not apply.

In the past, producers defended their controversial casting policy that called for principal roles to be performed by non-white actors, arguing the decision was central to the show’s artistic vision.

The controversy first erupted in 2016 after an open casting notice sought “non-white men and women” for the production, prompting criticism that the language excluded white performers and could violate anti-discrimination laws. Actors’ Equity, the union representing stage actors, said audition notices should provide “full and fair consideration to actors of all ethnicities,” while legal experts questioned whether the wording complied with New York City human rights law.

In response, producer Jeffrey Seller defended the policy, saying, “Hamilton depicts the birth of our nation in a singular way. We will continue to cast the show with the same multicultural diversity that we have employed thus far.” He added that “it is essential to the storytelling of Hamilton that the principal roles — which were written for non-white characters (excepting King George) — be performed by non-white actors.”

Producers later amended the casting notice to clarify that performers “of all ethnicities” were welcome to audition, while maintaining that the principal roles would continue to be cast with actors of color as part of the production’s creative vision.
