Brady, Everytown Oppose Pro-Gun ATF Reforms

Rabid gun-ban groups are continuing their attack on the Trump Administration’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives over recently announced reforms that would, in large part, undo infringements put upon gun owners and gun dealers by the Biden Administration.

The gun-ban trifecta files joint comments against the reforms

In the ultimate gun-banner trifecta, on July 8, Brady, Giffords and so-called Everytown for Gun Safety submitted first sets of joint public comments opposing proposed federal rules that they say “would significantly weaken firearms regulations and increase the risk of gun violence nationwide.”

While the rules would make it less onerous for gun owners to exercise their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, in the comments, the gun-ban groups lied that they would “dismantle critical protections designed to keep firearms out of the hands of people legally prohibited from possessing them.”

Brady’s Kris Brown: “Sweeping structural changes” that will cost lives

“These are not technical adjustments — they are sweeping structural changes that will reshape how guns are bought and sold in America, a country where guns outnumber people,” Brady President Kris Brown whined in a news release announcing the comments.

“At a time when gun crime is falling and homicide has reached a 100-year low — thanks in part to effective firearm policies — these changes will reverse hard-won progress and cost lives. They will make it easier for prohibited purchasers to obtain guns, harder for law enforcement to solve and prosecute gun crimes, and even admittedly likely that so-called ‘mass casualty events’ take place in communities across the country.”

NSSF: The reforms don’t change who’s prohibited or legalize straw purchases

Of course, that naysaying couldn’t be further from the truth. As the National Shooting Sports Foundation explained when debunking similar claims by gun-hating U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Connecticut, the reforms ATF recently announced did not change who is (still) prohibited from lawfully possessing a firearm.

“They (still) do not legalize straw purchasing,” NSSF said. “They are a course correction after years of regulatory overreach by the Biden administration that too often treated lawful gun owners and firearm retailers as the problem instead of focusing federal law enforcement resources where they belong: combatting violent criminals, traffickers, straw purchasers and willful violators.”

Everytown’s Feinblatt piles on with the same tired misinformation

Still, logic and truth don’t appeal much to those on the other side of the gun control debate, as evidenced by Everytown President John Feinblatt chipping in with more of the same half-truths and misinformation.

“Not only is there no public safety justification for the Trump administration’s dismantling of the rules that keep guns out of dangerous hands, but the Justice Department itself admits these changes could make mass casualty events more likely,” Feinblatt crowed. “Together, they add up to an ATF that can’t do its job, a DOJ that doesn’t want it to, and an administration willing to sell out on public safety for the right price. The gun safety movement will use every tool at our disposal to hold the Trump Administration accountable and ensure the next Congress is ready to hit the ground running with rigorous oversight of ATF.”

Pro-gun Americans need to flood the DOJ with counter-comments

Ultimately, it’s unlikely that the gun-ban groups’ comments will carry much weight. Pro-gun groups and individuals should flood the DOJ with comments countering those by Brady, Everytown and Giffords to ensure the agency hears our side of the story, too.
