Tom Selleck Plots TV Comeback At 80 After 'Blue Bloods' Cancellation

We’ve previously reported that the Hollywood star Tom Selleck was left devastated by the cancellation of his hit show Blue Bloods. He starred on the CBS police procedural drama from 2010 until the final episode aired in December of 2024.
Now, insiders are revealing that Selleck is plotting his television comeback at the age of 80. Indeed, it seems that Selleck isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet!
Selleck Isn’t ‘Ready To Say Goodbye’A source close to the actor is alleging that Selleck still believes that he has what it takes to be the face of a successful TV series. The former Magnum P.I. star is reportedly “turning his whole world upside down” to prove this to the industry.
“Blue Bloods went away before Tom was ready to say goodbye. And it’s not a great feeling for him to see his former co-stars thrive on the cheaper spinoff,” an insider said. This was a reference to Donnie Wahlberg’s spinoff Boston Blue, which is currently airing on CBS.
“To show the industry that he wants to stay in the game, Tom left his longtime agency representation,” the source continued.
Back in July, Selleck was photographed looking heavier than normal as he was caught by paparazzi near his home in Thousand Oaks, California. In the months since then, however, Selleck has undergone a physical transformation that has seen him get back in shape.
“All the junk food and lack of exercise had caught up to him,” another insider explained. “Over time, Tom cut back on the fast food. He’s been exercising and doing physical therapy.”
“Perception matters, and Tom still wants to be perceived as a bankable leading man, no matter how old he is,” this source added. “He still totally believes in himself.”
Selleck Facing ‘An Uphill Battle’The insider went on to say that the problem is that “Tom is still conducting business like it’s 1985, not 2025.”
“No matter how famous he is or how many millions of retirement-age fans he has, landing the lead role in a TV series is harder than ever,” the source lamented. “And it’s a process that favors new faces, not people like Tom who have been very famous for decades and decades.”
Selleck’s other friends in Hollywood have warned him that he needs to be realistic and temper his expectations when it comes to a potential Hollywood comeback.
“He’s got an uphill battle ahead of him to get back on TV,” the source concluded.

This comes after Selleck was left “heartbroken” by the cancellation of Blue Bloods. He spent about a year desperately trying to save the show, frequently pointing out that the police procedural was still a hit for CBS in its Friday night time slot.
“I’m kind of frustrated,” Selleck admitted to TV Insider in October of 2024. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful. In a Top 100 Shows of 2023-2024 (in total viewers, we were No. 9 out of 100), if you discount the three football shows, we’re No. 6!”
“My frustration is the show was always taken for granted because it performed from the get-go. So how do I feel? It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out,” he continued. “I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”

Blue Bloods has been replace in its time slot by Wahlberg’s spinoff Boston Blue. While this has been difficult for Selleck to stomach, he is still happy for his former co-star Wahlberg.
“Yes, Tom is very disappointed that the show ended,” a source told Daily Mail back in August. “He loved it. But there is no bad blood. Donnie recently approached him about starring, which is something he would like to do. But there aren’t any immediate plans for Tom to appear.”
Selleck has been one of the most beloved Hollywood stars for decades. He’s known for playing strong male characters who are the epitome of strength and masculinity.
We can only hope that Hollywood gives Selleck another shot to bring an iconic role to life. If anyone deserves to keep working in the entertainment industry as long as they want to, it’s Tom Selleck!
