Idaho is searching for volunteer police officers to carry out state executions by a firing squad so eight death row inmates can be put to death.

On Wednesday, Idaho became the sole state in the U.S. to make a firing squad, which entails a group of armed officers pummeling a death row inmate with bullets, its default method of execution. It comes about a year after officials botched the lethal injection of convicted murderer Thomas Eugene Creech.

Two bills related to firing squads were signed into law by Republican Gov. Brad Little, who is running for a third term this November. The implementation of the new law was delayed in 2025 to allow state officials to rebuild the execution chamber.

Now, officials have revealed how the state will carry out these capital punishment procedures in a disturbing blueprint, calling for prisons to seek volunteer police officers instead of execution specialists and potentially discharge a second wave of gunfire were an inmate to survive the first.

Three primary volunteer officers will prioritize fatal shots, and two alternates will stand by. The sixth volunteer will be the team leader, who is responsible for loading rifles and facilitating the execution.

Each volunteer will remain anonymous as dictated in state law, with only the prison director and deputy director knowing their names.

To become a volunteer officer, recruits must be certified Idaho law enforcement officers with a Peace Officer Standards and Training certification.

Furthermore, any disciplinary findings involving excessive force or the use of guns will be grounds for disqualification. Volunteer officers cannot be related by blood or marriage to the inmate, victim, or either family involved. Potential recruits will also be tested on their aim during firearm qualification tests, where they must repeatedly hit a heart-sized target without missing.

The state killings will occur in the renovated Maximum Security Institution south of Boise, in which taxpayers have invested $1.2 million to overhaul the state's execution chamber.

The cost of construction is estimated to be more than $900,000, and architectural design and engineering services is reportedly another $314,000

Spending another $24,000, Idaho officials also invested in five Daniel Defense DD5-P rifles that shoot .308 Winchester rounds as well as scopes, suppressors and bipods

The rifle model is "engineered for reliability in demanding conditions," according to the manufacturer’s website. It is built with components designed to reduce recoil.

The inmate slated for execution will also receive a light sedative on the day of the execution and potentially a few hours before it as well.
