Mamdani wears suit to cannonball into NYC pool to kick off summer tradition

Summer in New York City has officially started off with a splash.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani jumped into the Thomas Jefferson Pool in East Harlem pool Saturday alongside dozens of children and community members, as New York City kids celebrated their last day of school on June 26. The practice is a tradition in the Big Apple, with several mayors before him – except Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams – leaping into public pools as the official start of summer.
While others donned bathing suits and swim shirts, Mamdani kept with his usual uniform for the occasion: a full suit. The move actually violated city pool rules, which require all swimmers to wear bathing suits in the water.

New York City's five boroughs have over 50 public pools that will be open daily this summer from 11 a.m-7 p.m. until Sept. 13. Pools close every day from 3 p.m.-4 p.m. for cleaning.
This comes as New Yorkers are preparing for a heatwave leading up to July 4 weekend. Temperatures will hit the 80s early in the week, while exceeding 90 degrees Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The heat index, aka what it feels like outside, could exceed 100 degrees.
Many throughout the city may take a page out of Mamdani's book with a cannonball in the deep end.
