Secretary of State Marco Rubio will host representatives from more than 70 countries in Washington this week for a major counterterrorism summit focused on the growing threat of transnational far-left terrorism.

According to internal State Department documents obtained by ABC News, the meeting is designed to strengthen international cooperation against leftist organizations that use political violence and intimidation to advance their ideological agenda.

The summit was initially expected to include delegates from around 60 countries, but the State Department expanded the event after what it described as overwhelming international interest.

More than 10 additional nations have since been invited.

A briefing document distributed to participating governments argues that the threat has not received enough attention from the international community.

“For too long this threat has remained a blind spot in the international community’s counterterrorism focus, underestimated and under-resourced, despite the danger it poses.”

The document also says law enforcement and counterterrorism experts have identified a “clear trend” of “globally networked, politically motivated terrorists – particularly far-left terrorists” increasingly turning to “organized, deadly violence to advance their political objectives.”

According to the State Department, Thursday’s meeting will lay the groundwork for “coordinated action” against organizations “seeking to implement an extreme political vision through intimidation and coordinated campaigns of terror.”

State Department spokesperson Tommy Piggot wrote on X that the administration was “addressing gaps in our counterterrorism strategy that have been largely ignored by previous administrations.”

The summit comes as the Trump administration has made combating organized political violence a national security priority, particularly in the wake of the brutal assassination of Turning Point CEO Charlie Kirk.

The meeting is expected to focus on improving intelligence sharing, strengthening law enforcement cooperation and building a coordinated international strategy to disrupt far-left terrorist organizations before they can carry out future attacks.
