Zohran Mamdani speaks at press conference after eight shot during July 4 celebration

A masked thug shot eight people during a July 4 barbecue in Brooklyn’s Coney Island last night, including four children, and left one 21-year-old woman in critical condition. 

Police responded to reports of a shooting just after 10:30 pm.

Initial reporting from PIX 11 shows footage from the scene with police and ambulances responding. Early reporting suggested six people were shot, but police found eight people with gunshot wounds.

While discussing a separate shooting of an officer, New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters on Sunday, “In total, eight people were shot, four adults and four children, ages 6, 7, 12, and 14.”

“The preliminary investigation indicates that a family barbecue was taking place in the courtyard when an unknown male, dressed in all black and wearing a black ski mask, approached the fence line along Surf Avenue and fired multiple rounds into the courtyard. The individual then fled on foot southbound on West 30th Street toward Surf Avenue,” Tisch said.

She further said police are investigating whether it’s tied to a confirmed gang-related homicide that occurred earlier in the week on the same block.

A “TEC-9-style firearm” was recovered at the scene with ten shell casings, and police are still looking for the suspect.

“Seven of the victims are currently listed as not likely to die. One victim, a 21-year-old woman, was shot in the chest and is listed in critical condition,” she added.

Communist Mayor Zohran Mamdani also commented on the shooting, claiming he “will not tolerate” the violence in his lawless city. As if he’s going to do anything.

“Let us also recommit ourselves to the work of building a city where every celebration is safe and every holiday is joyful,” he said. It’s ironic given Mamdani’s history of radical anti-police positions, including calling the NYPD “racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety” and calling for defunding the police.

Coney Island resident, Nsowaa Stewart, told NBC at the scene she was “outraged” by the shooting of young children. “This is an emergency, and this has to be addressed,” she said. 

“If you go by there, you see bikes, you see children’s toys. It’s horrible to walk by there,” Stewart added. “This can’t happen again.”
