Vice President JD Vance shared a memorable story about his beloved grandmother that perfectly illustrated both her fierce independence and her unwavering commitment to protecting her family.

Speaking on The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe, Vance opened up about his late grandmother, the legendary “Mamaw” who helped raise him amid chaos and dysfunction. She was, in his words, “a woman of very devout Christian faith. She loved the f-bomb.”

While the gun-grabbing elites in Washington want to disarm law-abiding citizens and leave vulnerable Americans completely defenseless, Vance’s fierce, God-fearing grandmother had an entirely different plan.

JD Vance: “When she died, we discovered 19 loaded handguns in her house. Not just 19, but 19 spread randomly all over her house. What the hell did she need with a loaded handgun in the silverware drawer? She wanted to make sure that no matter where she was, if somebody walked into her house in Middletown, Ohio, she had a loaded handgun within arms reach because she couldn’t move around that well.”

While Democrat politicians and their billionaire donors lecture working-class families about “gun safety” and push for more restrictions, red tape, and eventual confiscation, stories like Vance’s grandmother’s reveal the truth: millions of Americans keep firearms for the same reason she did, because when seconds matter and the police are minutes away (or worse, defunded and demoralized), you protect your own.

Vance first told the story during his acceptance speech at the 2024 Republican National Convention, where it drew thunderous applause from the crowd.

“My mamaw died shortly before I left for Iraq in 2005, and when we went through her things, we found 19 loaded handguns,” Vance said.

“The thing is, they were stashed all over her house — under her bed, in her closet, in the silverware drawer,” he continued. “And we wondered what was going on, and it occurred to us that towards the end of her life, mamaw couldn’t get around so well.

“And so this frail old woman made sure that no matter where she was, she was within arm’s length of whatever she needed to protect her family. That’s who we fight for. That’s American spirit,” he added.
