News broke on Sunday, July 12, 2026, that longtime Senator Lindsey Graham had passed from a “brief and sudden illness”.

Graham has served in public office for 34 years and has been a U.S. Senator from South Carolina since 2003.

Graham’s sudden passing came shortly after the Senator visited Ukraine to meet with President Zelenskyy, drawing speculation that Russia had something to do with his death.

Statement from the Office of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham regarding his passing on July 11 due to sudden illness, requesting privacy and prayers for his family.

On July 12, around 12:53 PM, President Trump announced on Truth Social that he is ordering all flags across the nation to be half-staffed in honor of Graham:

Following the President’s announcement, flags across DC were half-staffed, including at the White House

Around 5 PM, just hours after the announcement, Alysia McMillan was out walking around Capitol Hill when she noticed that the flag on top of the Longworth building had not been lowered. She found this concerning and immediately noticed a Capitol Police officer, who let her know he would let someone know.

In the 10-15 minutes that followed, McMillan stuck around but did not witness the flag being lowered. By the time she returned around 6:00 pm, the flag had been lowered.

McMillan questioned the officer she had initially notified about the flag, asking if he had any knowledge of the delay. He let her know that he personally knew the person responsible for lowering the flag, but that, due to her “being short” and it being “windy” outside, she failed to do so.

This would mean that the flag was unsuccessfully attempted to be lowered and not that they just hadn’t gotten around to it yet.

If this is the case, why did the respective officer responsible for lowering the flag not properly communicate this with somebody else? How did no other officers notice this and/or bring it to anybody’s attention?

Was this intentional? Should that person be held accountable? If so, how?
