Zaluzhny is considered the favorite in a post-war election.

We have been reporting here on TGP that, since May 20, 2024, when his mandate expired, Volodymyr Zelensky has been ruling Ukraine by force of Martial law, becoming illegitimate in the eyes of many.

And, for over two years, a figure has been raising its profile to become a challenger if and when presidential elections take place: former Ukrainian top general Valery Zaluzhny, currently ambassador to the UK.

Zaluzhny throws his hat in the ring

Euronews reported:

“Former Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces and current Ambassador to the UK Valerii Zaluzhnyi intends to run in the next presidential elections, according to the latest domestic reports.

According to Ukrainian media outlet Ukrainska Pravda, Zaluzhnyi was summoned to Kyiv in mid-June, when incumbent President Volodymyr Zelensky reportedly asked his former top military commander whether he would take part in presidential elections if they were held in autumn.

According to the reports, Zaluzhnyi confirmed his intentions and explained that he had previously never sought a political career, ‘but many people are placing their hopes in him and he would not be able to explain why he should disregard that trust’.”

Friends or foes? Zelensky and Zaluzhny back in 2024

Voennoe Delo reported:

“Valery Zaluzhny, the former commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and now Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, would most likely be able to defeat Vladimir Zelensky in a presidential election if one were held in Ukraine. This conclusion was reached by political observers at the Ukrainian outlet Strana.ua.

The article argued that if Zelensky faced no strong rivals, almost any compromising material would be unlikely to cause him serious damage. However, if Zaluzhny entered the race, the publication of the so-called «Mindich tapes» featuring the president’s voice, along with other materials linked to corruption cases, could prove fatal for Zelensky’s rating.

The authors also noted that Zaluzhny may not be Zelensky’s only serious challenger. Ukrainian political circles are already discussing the possible ambitions of two other prominent figures from his team: Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov and head of the President’s Office Kirill Budanov.”
