WATCH: JD Vance Says Talks with Iran Resulted in “Very Good Foundation” to End War, Announces Iran Agreed to Allow IAEA Nuclear Inspectors into Country * The Gateway Pundit * by Jordan Conradson
Vice President JD Vance, as he departed Switzerland on Monday, said “a lot of good progress” was accomplished during negotiations with Iran on Sunday, setting up a path to a final deal and permanent settlement.
Vance arrived in Switzerland at around 6 am local time on Sunday, where he joined Special Envoys to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian Speaker of the Parliament, Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, and mediators from Qatar and Pakistan.
Vance said negotiations continued “well past one in the morning.”
“Yesterday was a very, very good day. We made a lot of good progress. We did exactly what we wanted to do, which is accomplish four things for the American people,” he said.
This includes a “mechanism for keeping the Strait of Hormuz open,” Vance said, noting that it is currently open with “millions of barrels of crude and natural gas” flowing.
“We also wanted to make sure that we actually set up the coordination mechanism so that we could demine the Straits of Hormuz, so that when there are the conflicts that inevitably come up, we can make sure we work through them rather than that leading to escalation, and that is exactly what we did yesterday,” he added.
On the ceasefire in Lebanon, Vance said a “mechanism for deconfliction” has been set up to ensure active communication when shooting begins in the region.
Most notably, Vance revealed that Iran has agreed to allow inspectors from the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) into Iran to ensure they are not rebuilding the nuclear program.
That is a major milestone for the American people, and the first step in permanently denuclearizing or permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran, and that’s exactly what we wanted to do. That’s exactly what we asked to happen,” Vance said, noting that they also made “a lot of great progress on other nuclear talks.” Conversations with the nuclear inspectors “could happen as soon as today,” Vance said.
The fourth accomplishment, Vance said, was setting up “the process for the technical negotiations that will follow” over the next 60 days.
“We laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal. The final deal is the house; we set the foundation. We haven’t built the house, but we’ve laid a successful foundation to get to a good place for the American people.”
As The Gateway Pundit reported, talks concluded on Sunday night with all sides saying progress was made on the nuclear issue, the ceasefire in Lebanon, the Strait of Hormuz, and a roadmap for continued discussions during the 60-day memorandum of understanding.
“We’ve had robust discussions on all elements of the nuclear deal. We plan to continue working through each of these issues and using today’s work as a starting point for ongoing technical talks going forward,” a Senior US Diplomat said.
Iran’s Foreign Minister also said “major progress” was made after the talks.
