Vice President JD Vance is increasingly stepping into the spotlight as the Trump administration works to manage high-stakes negotiations with Iran, fueling even more speculation that he is positioning himself as the leading America First contender for 2028.

Vance traveled to Switzerland this weekend as U.S.-Iran talks entered a critical stage, with the future of Iran’s nuclear program, regional stability, and the Strait of Hormuz all hanging in the balance.

The talks come as tensions remain high following reports that Iran claimed to have closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil passage, while the United States disputed those claims and said commercial shipping was still moving.

The moment marks one of the most serious foreign policy tests yet for Vance, who has gone from senator to vice president to one of the most visible figures in President Donald Trump’s second administration.

And it is not going unnoticed.

Over the past several weeks, Vance has appeared on major platforms, handled tense press moments, and now taken on a major diplomatic role in one of the most consequential foreign policy issues facing the country. For a vice president whose political future has long been the subject of speculation, the Iran negotiations are adding fuel to the fire.

Vance’s rise is especially notable because he has become one of the clearest voices of the new Republican Party: skeptical of endless wars, tough on America’s adversaries, and unapologetically committed to putting American interests first. That combination has made him a natural heir to the America First movement when Trump leaves office in January of 2029.

His role in the Iran talks also gives him something every future presidential candidate wants: a foreign policy record.

For years, critics of the America First movement claimed that Trump-style Republicans were not serious about diplomacy or global affairs. But Vance’s involvement in the Iran negotiations gives the administration a chance to show that strength and restraint can work together.

The message is simple: America does not need to police the world, but it also cannot allow hostile regimes to threaten U.S. interests, American allies, or the global economy.

That is the balance Vance is now being asked to help strike.

Of course, the 2028 election is still years away. Vance has not announced any campaign, and President Trump remains the unquestioned leader of the Republican Party. But politics is about positioning, and Vance’s position is becoming harder to ignore.

A vice president who can handle hostile media, defend the administration in public, and represent the United States in major negotiations is building a résumé.

Whether the Iran talks succeed or collapse, Vance’s role in them will likely be remembered as part of his broader transformation from rising conservative star to serious national leader.

For now, JD Vance is not officially running for president.

But with every press conference, every major media appearance, and now every diplomatic mission, the 2028 buzz is only getting louder.
