Failing Macron wants Zelensky to buy European weapons with the money the EU lent him.

The highly unpopular French President Emmanuel Macron is pressuring to stop Ukraine from buying American weapons with the $100 billion EU loan.

He wants the funds to be spent only in the European defense industry.

The Telegraph reported:

“Emmanuel Macron, the French president, has long argued that the bloc’s support for Ukraine should be used to bolster the Continent’s arms manufacturers and promote defense independence from the United States.

But Germany and the Netherlands said this approach would impede the delivery of weapons key to Kyiv’s defense, including American-made Patriot air-defense systems.”

EU countries and the European Commission are arguing over the details of the loan that favors weapon deliveries since it was thought that Russia was not going to stop fighting.

Two-thirds of the $100 billion will be spent on weaponry, with the rest filling Kiev’s budget black hole.

“Both Germany and the Netherlands have argued that those conditions are too strict and an EU diplomat told The Telegraph that the Commission had ‘listened way too much to Paris’ and ‘angered many’ with its stance.

Germany and the Netherlands – which both operate Patriot batteries and have donated them to Ukraine in the past – also argue that there are no alternatives available to the American-made system.”
