One of America’s worst police chiefs will be out of a job following President Trump’s bold move to federalize the DC police force and send in the National Guard.

As NBC 4 Washington reported on Monday, Metropolitan Police Department Chief of Police Pamela A. Smith is stepping down after two years in office. Her last day in office will be December 31.

Smith was appointed in 2023 and is the first Black woman to serve as chief of the D.C. police department. She joined the MPD in 2022 and served as its Chief Equity Officer, where she led the department’s efforts on DEI.

“She came in at a challenging time for our community, where there was significant urgency to reverse the crime trends our city was facing post-pandemic,” D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement. “Chief Smith dramatically drove down violent crime, drove down the homicide rate to its lowest levels in eight years, and helped us restore a sense of safety and accountability in our neighborhoods.”

“We are grateful for her service to Washington, DC.”

Smith released the following statement confirming her departure and expressing gratitude for the unearned opportunity she received:

I am deeply humbled, grateful, and deeply appreciative of my time with the District of Columbia.

Serving as Chief of Police has been the greatest honor of my career, and I want to extend my sincere thanks to Mayor Muriel Bowser for appointing me to this position and to the DC Council for their steadfast support throughout my tenure.

I am confident that the department is in a strong position and that the great work will continue, moving in a positive trajectory to combat crime and enhance public safety.

Washington, DC is an extraordinary place to live, visit, and work, and I remain inspired by the resilience and spirit of this community.

As TGP readers know, Trump announced over the summer that he was invoking Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act to place Washington, DC’s Metropolitan Police Department under “direct federal control” and authorizing the Secretary of Defense to deploy National Guard troops in Washington, DC.

“We’re formally declaring a public safety emergency. This is an emergency. This is a tragic emergency, and it’s embarrassing,” Trump said. “This city will no longer be a sanctuary for illegal alien criminals. We will have full, seamless, integrated cooperation at all levels of law enforcement, and we’ll deploy officers across the district with an overwhelming presence.”

Trump also said that Attorney General Pam Bondi was “taking command” of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department.

His move was immediately validated. Not only did crime immediately plummet, but Smith revealed her complete incompetence in a press conference when asked a simple question about the current chain of command.

“Do you know what the chain of command is now?” a reporter queried.

This is a question any top law enforcement officer should be able to answer. But Smith had no clue what the reporter was talking about.

“What does that mean?” she asked.

She then walked away from the podium, and Bowser stepped up.
