One of the worst shootings in Australia’s history unfolded Sunday evening in Sydney as two terrorists slaughtered at least 11 Jewish beachgoers who were celebrating Hanukkah. One of the gunmen is also deceased.

As The Daily Mail reported, two men stepped out of a vehicle on Campbell Parade, near Bondi Pavilion, and opened fire at Bondi Beach at roughly 6.40 pm on Sunday. Witnesses report that more than 30 shots were fired.

29 other people were injured in the attack, including two police officers and a child. They have been taken to hospitals in Sydney for treatment.

Police discovered several suspicious items in the vicinity of the incident. This included an improvised explosive device.

A black and white flag was also left behind on the bonnet of a silver Honda at the scene. The meaning of the flag is currently unknown.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the incident “an act of evil antisemitism and terrorism” during a press conference following the attack.

“An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian,” he added.

Here is video footage of the gunmen opening fire on the helpless beachgoers as they scream out in terror.

A social media user captured beachgoers running for their lives as several gunshots rang out.

One fearless bystander put his own life on the line and played the role of hero by snatching the gun away from one terrorist before he could slaughter anyone else.

One of the gunmen was identified as 24-year-old Naveed Akram. He is from Bonnyrigg in Sydney’s south-west.

According to the Daily Mail, Akram was shot, arrested, and remains in custody, where emergency services are treating him. Police are also currently raiding his home.

Here is his driver’s license.

Unconfirmed reports say Akram is a Pakistani immigrant. He was apparently radicalized at some point.

The other gunman was killed at the scene. He has been identified as Khaled Al-Nablusi.

Survivors of the attack relived their nightmare in interviews. One person described the horror of watching her husband being killed in front of her.

From the Daily Mail:

Larisa Kleytman was with her husband when he was shot dead while trying to protect her. Married for five decades, Mrs Kleytman and her husband, Alex, came from Matraville to celebrate Chanukah.

The couple were in the crowd when Mrs Kletyman heard ‘boom boom’ and the shooting began.

“I think he was shot because he raised himself up to protect me, in the back of the head,” she said.

A visitor from London described hearing fireworks go off while video-calling with family before seeing a man firing from his white car. He then saw an elderly lady get killed.

Another witness, Tim Hamilton, told the Daily Mail that he “thought he heard a car backfiring but more violent than that, like a little bit louder.”
