Just In: National Guard Identifies Two US Soldiers Killed in Syria | The Gateway Pundit | by Margaret Flavin
Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa,(L) and Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, (R) were killed Saturday while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.
The Gateway Pundit reported that multiple American service members were injured during an ambush in Syria on Saturday, and two soldiers and a civilian interpreter were killed.
Fox News reports that the Army has now identified the two Iowa National Guard soldiers who died in the attack.
The U.S. Army on Monday identified two Iowa National Guard soldiers who were killed in Palmyra, Syria, over the weekend.
Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, Iowa, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa, were killed Saturday while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.
The Army said the incident remains under investigation.
The Iowa National Guard shared in a press release: In accordance with Department of War release authority, the Iowa National Guard is releasing the names of two Soldiers who were killed in an enemy attack on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025, in Palmyra, Syria.
The deceased Soldiers are Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Sgt. Edgar Brian Torrestovar, 25, of Grimes, lowa. Both were members of the Ist Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment.
“Today, we honor the memory and sacrifice of Sgt. Howard and Sgt. Torrestovar by sharing their names with a grateful state and nation,” said Maj. Gen. Stephen Osborn, adjutant general of the Iowa National Guard.
“They were dedicated professionals and cherished members of our Guard family who represented the best of Iowa. Our focus now is providing unwavering support to their families through this unimaginable time and ensuring the legacy of these two heroes is never forgotten.”
Three other Iowa National Guard Soldiers were wounded in the attack. Two of the Soldiers required medical evacuation for further treatment and are in stable condition.
The third Soldier has been treated locally and is in good condition. Per Department of War policy, their names will not be released.
All the Soldiers involved are assigned to the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, which is part of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.
The brigade is currently deployed to the Middle East in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S. mission to advise, assist, and enable partner forces in the enduring defeat of ISIS.
