(The Center Square) – The federal government is sinking more than $100 million in taxpayer money into already high-performing public charter schools in Ohio over the next five years.

The money comes from a new federal program announced in May that targeted school choice and charter schools.

In Ohio, public charter schools operate independently of local school district control, funded by tax dollars and free for students.

“This funding represents a significant investment in Ohio’s future and will give more Ohio families access to high-quality education options that meet the needs of their students,” Gov. Mike DeWine said in a statement.

The $105 million is spread over five years and in two specific areas.

Ohio’s plan for the money puts a focus on students in areas with limited school choice options, including rural communities, along with areas with low-income students.

The first is $55.5 million in grants to replicate successful school models and expand existing schools that have shown strong academic areas, according to the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.

Another $49.2 million comes in the form of matching funds for high-performing schools to meet facility costs.

The facilities grants focus on charter schools in areas where public schools have been identified for improvement and geographic areas where a large number of students have performed poorly on state tests. It also focuses on areas with a large number of low-income students.

“We’re investing in schools that are making a measurable difference and bringing those successes to additional communities across the state, ensuring that more students benefit from high-quality learning environments,” Education and Workforce Director Stephen Dackin said.

Ohio is one of six states to receive nearly $300 million in federal money for charter schools.

“A one-size fits all education system is not working for our students,” U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement. “Charter schools allow for innovative educational models that expand learning opportunities for students. The Trump Administration will continue to use every available tool to advocate for meaningful learning, advance school choice, and ensure every student is well-positioned to succeed.”
