AT&T is officially moving forward with slashing all landline service in a US state after first announcing the plan in 2024.

But the network provider insists the vast majority of its customers won’t mind the change.

AT&T wants to halt landline service in all of America but is having to fight some consumer protection laws in states like California.

As for Florida, residents should expect to see wire services black out by the end of 2029.

“In Florida, we have seen a 91% decline of customers using copper-based landlines in the past 10 years,” a spokesperson told The Daytona Beach News-Journal.

AT&T says a sharp decrease in demand and expensive copper-based technology made halting the landline services a no brainer.

Making matters worse is the rising trend of copper thieves who have been plundering wires to resell the precious metal.

“Repairs take longer than fiber and wireless technology, leading to prolonged disruptions for customers,” said the company.

But not everyone is ready to move on, as some homeowners are clinging to the reliability of their vintage phones.

Landlines are able to better cut through network issues brought on by bad weather, which is a major pro for Floridians.

The wire service is also key for fax machines, alarm systems, medical monitoring, and other essentials.

Still, less than seven percent of residents in the state were actually found to regularly use their wired phones, according to a survey conducted by the National Center for Health.

AT&T stressed it was intentionally rolling out a multi-year process to ensure all users had access to 911 before cutting service.
