DONALD Trump has threatened to slap tariffs on several European countries including the UK as he continues his campaign to annex Greenland.

The US president said he will impose tariffs of 10 per cent on all goods imported into the US from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands and Finland – unless he is allowed to buy Greenland.

The tariffs will come into effect on February 1 and will rise to a huge 25 per cent if Trump still does not have his hands on the Arctic island by June.

Trump announced the taxes in a post on Trump Social, where he wrote that he had subsidised European countries “for many years by not charging them tariffs”.

He declared: “Now, after centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back – world peace is at stake!”

Trump repeated claims that China and Russia could take Greenland if it does not come under US control.

He claimed Greenland “currently has two dogsleds as protection, one added recently”, calling the island a “sacred piece of land”.

He wrote: “On top of everything else, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, The United Kingdom, The Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown.

“This is a very dangerous situation for the safety, security and survival of our planet.

“These countries, who are playing this very dangerous game, have put a level of risk in play that is not tenable or sustainable.”

The US president said tariffs will be paid “until such time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland”.

The Republican president has repeatedly tried to use trade penalties to bend allies and rivals alike to his will, generating investment commitments from some nations and pushback from others such as China, Brazil and India.

It is unclear how Trump could impose the tariffs under US law, though he could cite economic emergency powers that are currently subject to a US Supreme Court challenge.

It comes after crunch talks between America, Denmark and Greenland in Washington on Wednesday which failed to resolve the “fundamental disagreement” over the mineral-rich island.

As tensions build, Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk has issued a chilling warning.

Speaking at a press conference he said: “An attempt to take over (part of) a Nato member state by another Nato member state would be a political disaster.

“It would be the end of the world as we know it, which guaranteed a world based on Nato solidarity, which held back the evil forces associated with communist terror or other forms of aggression.”

Trump has repeatedly argued the US must own Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, to prevent Russia or China from gaining a foothold in the Arctic.

Earlier this week, the UK announced it had sent a military officer to Greenland as Denmark stepped up its military presence in the Arctic and High North.

It follows Trump’s plan for a mega consulate with armoured windows, “CIA spies” and interns to win over locals on the island.

Experts say he will fill the new 3,000 square metre “luxury” tower basement with armoured windows and CIA and NSA spies.

America reopened the consulate in 2020, after the first one closed in 1953.
