Those killed were identified as a guide and a doctor – both Tanzanians – a Zimbabwean pilot and two tourists from the Czech Republic, the Tanzania National Parks said in a statement.

Local news outlets reported that the helicopter was on a medical rescue mission.

Regional police commander Simon Maigwa told reporters that the aircraft was operated by Kilimanjaro Aviation, a company that provides medical evacuation and other aviation services.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, is 20,000 ft above sea level.

Around 50,000 tourists climb Kilimanjaro annually.

It comes after 11 people were killed when a small plane carrying tourists crashed on its way to a famous wildlife safari in Kenya.

The flight was en route to the Maasai Mara National Reserve and crashed in a hilly and forested area in the coastal region of Kwale, authorities said.

They said that 11 people were on board the Cessna Caravan-type aircraft which crashed – killing everyone on board.

Officials said that the aircraft, operated by Kenyan airline Mombasa Air Safari, was carrying holidaymakers to the popular safari experience at the time of the crash.

The airline said that eight Hungarians, two Germans and a Kenyan crew member were on the plane.

The aircraft crashed minutes after takeoff and burst into flames, leaving a charred wreckage at the scene, officials said.

Witnesses said that they heard a loud bang and found the plane’s wreckage on arrival at the scene.
