There are already several construction projects surrounding the National Mall. During the same meeting, Trump touted his redesign of the reflecting pool lying east of the Lincoln Memorial and his proposed 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery across the river.

Trump and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who is overseeing the renovations, said the projects complete designs for the Mall dating back to the McMillan Plan of 1902, which laid the blueprint for the modern renovation of the Mall.

Burgum said the project will include pedestrian footbridges to allow visitors to easily cross Parkway Drive and Ohio Drive, the two roads that lie in between the river and the Lincoln Memorial.

“Right now, there’s no pedestrian access,” Burgum said. “Now to be able to walk around the Lincoln Memorial, walk on a pedestrian bridge over the first highway, walk over the next one and right down to the water. … These projects would complete the original vision of the McMillan Plan.”

The White House did not answer questions on further details about the promenade, including a proposed timeline, referring back to Trump’s comments. The Interior Department and National Park Service did not immediately respond to similar questions.

The Lincoln Memorial is already in the midst of a major renovation. The space underneath the memorial is being transformed into a museum, theater and store in a project that was launched before Trump’s return to the White House

The promenade would add to Trump’s long list of construction projects on Washington landmarks during his second term.

His construction of a ballroom on the White House grounds has drawn criticisms from historians and legal challenges seeking to block the project. A federal judge prohibited Trump last week from shutting down the Kennedy Center for renovations and affixing his name to the building. And his administration reached an agreement to renovate the East Potomac Golf Links in Washington after a pressure campaign to take control of the course.
