Van Jones: Pratt's LA Rise Spells Trouble for California Democrats

CNN commentator Van Jones said Spencer Pratt’s unexpected strength in the Los Angeles mayoral race should concern California Democrats, arguing that voters are sending a message about the direction of the city and state.
Pratt, a Republican and former reality TV personality, is on track to move into a November runoff against Democrat Mayor Karen Bass after a crowded all-party primary.
His campaign has gained traction among LA residents amid anger over homelessness, public safety, and the handling of the Palisades wildfires, which destroyed his home.
Jones, appearing on CNN’s “NewsNight” Tuesday, said the race reflects more than celebrity politics.
“There’s a lot of problems that people are upset about,” Jones said. “If a reality TV star winds up going head-to-head with Karen Bass, given how unpopular the reality TV star president is, Donald Trump, it just gives you a sense of the level of discontent.”
Bass led the primary field with 34.8% of the vote, according to Decision Desk HQ, but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Pratt followed with 30.4%, while Los Angeles City Council member Nithya Raman trailed at 22.3%.
California’s primary system places all candidates on the same ballot, regardless of party. When no candidate receives more than 50%, the top two vote-getters advance.
Jones said he believes Bass is still favored to win but warned Democrats not to dismiss Pratt’s showing.
