According to the American Heart Association (AHA), drinking up to five 8-ounce cups of caffeinated coffee a day may lower risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, stroke and heart failure. Researchers found that this amount, which is about 400 milligrams of caffeine, appears safe for most adults.

In a new scientific statement published in Circulation, the AHA emphasized that the findings apply to moderate coffee consumption, not high-dose caffeine products such as energy drinks, and that benefits may vary depending on a person’s health, caffeine sensitivity and how the coffee is prepared.

According to ABC News, the new recommendations offer a comprehensive review of recent clinical trials that show that daily coffee can even reduce the recurrence of irregular heart rhythms in patients who have had corrective procedures by an impressive 39%. It can also lower the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 20% to 30%.

Based on the results of the latest research, consuming up to 400 mg of caffeine per day, or no more than three to five, eight-ounce cups of regular black caffeinated coffee per day —without sugars, sweeteners, flavors or added fillers — is considered safe for most adults, according to an AHA news release.
