UNC-Wilmington Administrators Admit To Skirting State's DEI Ban

WILMINGTON, NC – A new video released by Accuracy in Media (AIM) on Thursday accuses administrators at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) of covertly continuing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives despite a system-wide ban by the UNC Board of Governors.

The video features UNCW staff admitting to rebranding DEI programs and positions to evade the prohibition, raising concerns about compliance with the state’s directive.

Last spring, the UNC Board of Governors voted to eliminate DEI offices and related spending across the university system. However, the AIM video shows Asher Persin, UNCW’s Mohin-Scholz LGBTQIA Center Coordinator, stating the university is “trying to be a little sneaky” with DEI-based programming.

Ashlee Fleming, Upperman African American Cultural Center Coordinator, reveals that while 11 positions were “eliminated” on paper, they were “technically replaced” with new roles to maintain similar functions.

Persin further explains that UNCW altered the language of DEI programs to continue operating under the mission of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, which was officially closed earlier this summer.

“We didn’t fire anybody,” Persin notes, adding clarity on “who’s actually working the DEI stuff now.” The video suggests a deliberate effort to sidestep the Board’s mandate through administrative maneuvers.

AIM President Adam Guillette condemned UNCW’s actions, stating, “Our investigation proves that UNCW only disbanded its Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion on paper. In reality, they simply moved employees around and renamed programs to continue conducting the exact same radical indoctrination.”

Guillette called for immediate action from UNCW’s administration to address the alleged violations.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions over DEI policies in higher education, with critics arguing that such programs promote ideological agendas, while supporters view them as essential for fostering inclusivity.

UNCW has not yet issued a public response to the allegations, but the video is likely to spark further scrutiny of how the university is navigating the UNC system’s DEI restrictions.
