President Donald Trump on Wednesday offered new details about what he said was a vandalism campaign targeting the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, claiming suspects slashed the pool’s liner and poured chemicals into the water.

Trump told reporters Wednesday that authorities have made multiple arrests and that investigators have documented extensive damage to the project.

The president said vandals cut a large gash into the pool’s newly installed liner and dumped chemicals into the water, forcing additional repairs.

Trump argued the damage stemmed from deliberate acts rather than flaws in the renovation project.

The comments came as questions persist about problems that emerged following the multimillion-dollar rehabilitation of the iconic National Mall landmark.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said over the weekend that individuals caught vandalizing the Reflecting Pool would be fully prosecuted and that federal authorities intended to pursue cases involving damage to national landmarks.
