'Super flu' reportedly claimed lives of 15 US children over past week

More than a dozen children have died this week from ‘super flu’ as the year’s brutal virus season finally slows.
Health officials in Virginia announced its first pediatric flu-related death this week in a child under four years old, an age when children are particularly vulnerable to severe illness due to underdeveloped immune systems.
In Ohio, a six-year-old and a teenager under the age of 18 died of the virus, bringing the state’s total to three in less than a month.
South Carolina estimates its flu deaths are triple that of last year, with 19 reported for the 2025-2026 season.
And in Utah, four-year-old Elora ‘Ellie’ Ann Rudd lost her life after becoming so ill with the flu that she suffered a stroke.
A total of 15 pediatric flu-related deaths were reported this week, according to the latest CDC data, bringing the season’s total to 32. At this time last year, there were 27.
