Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., accused Democrats of prioritizing political power over public safety Wednesday on Newsmax’s “Rob Schmitt Tonight” after a House hearing featuring families of Americans killed by illegal aliens.

McClintock said he was “shocked and appalled, but I can’t say particularly surprised” by what he described as Democrats’ response in the hearing, pointing to the case of Sheridan Gorman, a college freshman shot to death in Chicago earlier this year.

Jose Medina, a Venezuelan national with no legal status in the U.S., is charged with first-degree murder and weapons offenses in connection with her killing. He has pleaded not guilty.

The Department of Homeland Security asserts that Medina is an illegal alien with a criminal record.

“Rather than turning him over to ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to be deported as the law requires, Chicago sanctuary laws released him back into the community,” McClintock said.

“That’s why he was there and able to murder Sheridan in such a cold-blooded way.”
