Ohio Governor DeWine Opposes Haiti TPS Deportations

Ohio Republican Gov. Mike DeWine on Sunday urged the Trump administration to refrain from deporting Haitian citizens who have been in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status, which the Supreme Court ruled can be terminated.
Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” DeWine said he respects the Supreme Court’s decision allowing the Trump administration to end TPS for Haitians and Syrians but believes the administration should reconsider the policy on practical and economic grounds.
“I think it’s a mistake,” DeWine said, arguing Haiti remains too dangerous for large-scale returns and that many Haitians have become productive members of communities across Ohio.
DeWine pointed to continuing gang violence in Haiti, noting that commercial U.S. flights remain barred from Port-au-Prince because armed gangs have repeatedly fired on aircraft.
“Gangs control a significant part of Haiti,” he said. “It is clearly not safe.”
Beyond security concerns, DeWine argued that removing Haitians who have established lives in the United States would hurt Ohio’s economy.
“It is not in the United States’ interests, certainly not in Ohio’s interest, to have people who are working every single day, who are supporting a family, who are buying houses, fixing up old houses, starting businesses, putting deep roots in this country, and really contributing — and then yank them out,” he told host Jake Tapper.
