NYC To Shut Down Roosevelt Hotel Migrant Housing

New York City will be shutting down its operation to house migrants in the coming months, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams. The hotel has been used as a hub for many who have crossed the border illegally during the Biden administration.
Adams, a Democrat who has moderated on the issue of illegal immigration, said that the intake hub closing down its operations will be a “milestone” for New York City. Over 232,000 migrants have come to the city since spring 2022, per the New York Post.
“While we’re not done caring for those that came into our care, today marks another milestone in demonstrating the immense progress we have achieved in turning the corner on the unprecedented international humanitarian effort,” Adams said.
In a video message, Adams added that the operation would be closing down because of “the successful strategies we put in place here in New York City and because of policies we advocated for at the border.”
The hotel will shut down its operations as a migrant shelter by June, the outlet reported. The number arriving in the Big Apple has come down to about 350 a week, which is a dramatic drop from the 4,000 weekly arrivals that were happening at the height of the immigration crisis.
The Adams administration said that between this coming June and June last year, a total of 53 shelters will be shut down and all tent cities will be disbanded in the Big Apple. The Roosevelt hotel, which has around 1,000 rooms, was turned into a migrant registration center as well as an emergency shelter in May 2023 as migrants were bused in from other states. The Post reported that around 173,000 migrants went through the hotel’s intake center when they arrived at the city since that time.
