Christine Pelosi, the daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, announced on Monday that she is running for California state Senate and is not seeking her mother’s House seat in San Francisco.

Nancy Pelosi announced last week that she would not run for reelection in 2026, meaning her nearly 40-year congressional career will end next year. She has been representing the majority of San Francisco since 1987.

Christine Pelosi, who was a potential replacement for her mother in the lower chamber, said she would fight for consumer rights, women’s rights, gun violence survivors, and immigrants if elected to the state Senate next year.

“What do we do when our freedoms are under attack? We speak up, we fight back and we organize,” she said in a video on X.

The younger Pelosi, who is running to represent San Francisco in the state chamber, spent a decade as chair of the California Democratic Party’s Women’s Caucus, and is now on the executive committee of the Democratic National Committee.

Although Christine Pelosi is not considering a bid for even higher office, California state Sen. Scott Wiener and Saikat Chakrabarti, a former top aide to New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have declared their candidacies to take Nancy Pelosi’s place in the U.S. Congress.
