Mike Johnson Warns 'Many Mamdanis' Coming

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., warned Sunday that a wave of democratic socialist candidates echoing New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani poses a threat to American governance, amplifying President Donald Trump’s Fourth of July attack on the socialist movement as the two parties turn toward the 2026 midterms.
Appearing on “Fox News Sunday” with Shannon Bream, Johnson said Mamdani-aligned candidates are surfacing in Democratic primaries nationwide and that voters should take the trend seriously.
He described democratic socialism as “a serious threat to our whole system of government,” casting the movement as a fundamental challenge to American political tradition rather than a routine ideological drift within the opposition party.
The speaker leaned on Cold War framing to press the point, contrasting Ronald Reagan’s warnings about communism abroad with what he called a domestic version now visible in U.S. politics.
“The barbarians are inside the gate,” Johnson said, arguing that today’s Democratic Party bears little resemblance to earlier versions. He also said Democrat lawmakers privately feel outmatched by the energy, money, and grassroots activity fueling the insurgent left.
Johnson’s remarks followed President Donald Trump’s Saturday address on the National Mall marking the country’s 250th anniversary, where the president cast democratic socialism as a communist resurgence and urged aggressive pushback.
