'Mass casualty event' reported at NCAA playoff game in West Virginia

Multiple people were taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon following what 911 officials called a “mass casualty event” at Kendrick Family Ball Park in Morgantown.
According to a 12 News employee on the scene, a canopy on top of the hill near the ball park, colloquially referred to as “Randy’s Ridge,” partially blew over amid a Severe Thunderstorm Warning in Monongalia County, injuring multiple people. Witnesses told our employee that at least three ambulances were seen.
MECCA 911 confirmed to 12 News that multiple people were taken to the hospital as a result of the incident, which was officially labelled a “mass casualty incident.” No other information was provided, but we were encouraged to follow up at a later time.
The incident comes amid the Morgantown NCAA Baseball Super Regional between WVU and Cal Poly. The hillside by the ballpark has attracted thousands of fans over the past week as a free way to watch the team play in the postseason. The game had been in a lightning delay since just after 3 p.m., but resumed less than two hours later.
