The Oskaloosa Community School District board voted to fire a high school teacher for a post he made about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

It happened during a special board meeting Wednesday night.

Despite the fact that the meeting was not open for public comment, dozens of parents and community members attended to make their thoughts known.

“When you see four or five news vehicles in the parking lot, you want that to be for some kind of positive achievement,” Kyle Almond, an Oskaloosa resident, said. “That’s not what it is today.”

In addition to heavy backlash on social media, the district says it received over 1,200 phone calls in response to the teacher’s post. Just under 10 percent of students were also absent after the post was made.

“When you say something like that, you’re showing that you don’t care,” Shawn Garrison, an Oskaloosa parent, said of the post. “And a community can’t survive if everybody’s not caring.”
