The Hernando Board of Aldermen rejected an attempt to rename a street in the city after murdered conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Alderman Kit Kitchens proposed the name change for a street leading up to Hernando High School, but his motion failed to get a second from any of the other aldermen.

During the meeting inside Hernando City Hall Tuesday night, citizens like Chris Pierce, whose brother was killed in a hit-and-run in Memphis a month ago, say Charlie Kirk’s message of family, faith and country resonate deeply.

“I don’t want to talk about who Charlie has changed,” he told the board, “I want to talk about who Charlie is going to change. He may not be here on this Earth today, but he is alive in millions of millions of people like me.”

But for Army veteran and retired Olive Branch Police officer Henry Minor, renaming a street in Hernando after Kirk is not a way to unify Hernando’s 19,000 residents.

“I fought for this country and peoples’ right to free speech and to say what they want to say,” said Minor, “but I disagree with renaming this street after this gentleman because he is divisive. I think we should name it after a person that can bring this community together.”

Eleven citizens addressed the board–4 in support of the name change, 7 against. Aldermen also read emails from constituents, most also opposed to renaming the street.
