Former British Ambassador to the U.S. Peter Mandelson has apologized over his links with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“I did not want to be held responsible for his [Jeffrey Epstein’s] crimes of which I was ignorant, not indifferent, because of the lies he told me and so many others,” Mandelson told the BBC’s “Newsnight” on Monday via a statement.

“I was wrong to believe him following his conviction and to continue my association with him afterwards. I apologise unequivocally for doing so to the women and girls who suffered.”

Mandelson was removed from his post in September following fallout from his connections with Epstein.

The U.K.’s minister of state for Europe, North America and overseas territories, Stephen Doughty, delivered the announcement of Mandelson’s ouster to the House of Commons in September, pointing to “additional information in the emails written” by the former ambassador.
