False Shooter Alert Leads To Real-Life Gunfire At Naval Academy

A false active shooter threat at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis Thursday led to real-life gunfire when a sheltering midshipman was shot by an officer following a confrontation that stemmed from an apparent misunderstanding, according to reports and officials.
Gunshots were reportedly heard inside Bancroft Hall, a massive 1,600-person dormitory on the vaunted campus, shortly after a shelter-in-place warning went out across the campus, NBC Washington reported.
A Navy student who was sheltering under the lockdown order mistook a responding officer for the falsely reported active shooter — and sprang into action.
The midshipman attacked the officer with a training weapon, causing the officer to respond by shooting the brave but mistaken student, NBC Washington reported.
That individual was taken by medevac helicopter off campus and to a local hospital in stable condition, according to a statement from the Navy.
