Denmark is boosting its military presence in and around Greenland as part of expanded NATO military exercises, the country’s defense ministry announced Wednesday, amid President Trump’s escalating rhetoric about acquiring the island.

The Danish Defense Ministry said aircraft, naval vessels and soldiers will be deployed to Greenland, including from NATO allies. The forces will guard critical installations, assist local authorities and prepare for additional allied troops. The drills are aimed at expanding NATO’s footprint in the Arctic and training forces to operate in harsh conditions, officials said.

The Danish Defense Ministry noted Wednesday that it strengthened its presence in and around Greenland last summer as well with assistance from Germany, France, Sweden and Norway.

The expanded military presence comes as Trump has ramped up talk of taking control of the mineral-rich island in recent weeks, arguing it is essential to U.S. national security.

The president wrote on Truth Social Wednesday that “anything less than” than U.S. control of the autonomous Danish territory is “unacceptable.”
