Chicago gets $16.6B budget after mayor refuses to veto

Just in time for Christmas, Chicago aldermen got the 2026 budget they pushed on Mayor Brandon Johnson when he agreed not to veto it Dec. 23.

Johnson did file executive orders on police overtime, the sale of city debt and efforts to collect city fines and fees. He said he did not want to force a city shutdown by vetoing the budget, but he also said he would not sign it.

After months of debate, Chicago’s final $16.6 billion budget passed the City Council 29-19 on Dec. 20. Johnson’s $82 million head tax on businesses was not in it, another major political loss for the mayor.
