Washington DC’s police chief, Pamela A. Smith, has resigned from her position after two and a half years on the job.

Smith, who became police chief when homicides were at a 26-year-high DC, was brought in to help combat the city’s surging violent crime.

Her shocking exit from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was announced early Monday morning.

Mayor Muriel Bowser said that during Smith’s tenure, the city opened a real-time crime center, deployed improved technology and passed comprehensive legislation that prioritizes accountability.
