Iqalummiut can again wash their vehicles with a seven-year ban now lifted.

The ban, introduced in 2018, had been in place to help preserve water in the city’s reservoir from Lake Geraldine. City staff say that as of early September the reservoir has a safe supply of water.

Iqaluit councillors voted unanimously in favour of lifting the ban at a council meeting on Tuesday.

Iqaluit resident Anne Crawford said it comes as welcome news, and is excited to be able to get her truck washed.

“Honestly it is just the talk of the town this morning. Everyone is talking about ‘I can wash my car!’ It’s wonderful,” she said.

Still, Crawford says she wonders what the long-term plan is to ensure that water will be conserved in the future.
