HBO host Bill Maher said Sunday his vote is “in play” for the 2028 presidential election and that he could support Vice President JD Vance if Democrats continue moving further to the left.

“Democrats are cowardly,” Maher told ABC’s “This Week” host Jonathan Karl. “They’re cowardly.”

He explained that Democrat leaders have failed to stand up to what he described as increasingly radical voices within the party.

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and other progressive factions are gaining influence while moderate Democrats remain silent, Maher added.

“Their party is being taken over now,” he said. “Every day I hear about a new very radical guy.”

Maher said he lost fans years ago by criticizing the political left but refused to ignore positions he considers extreme.

“I wasn’t gonna go along with some of this crazy stuff on the left, too,” he said. “I can’t sit and just not notice stuff, which people seem to want to do because it’s all about my team or your team.”

Referring to pro-Palestinian demonstrations, he added: “When we’re cheering for the Intifada … cut! I’m out.”

Maher also criticized proposals he attributed to the DSA, including what he described as calls for a “takeover of key industries.”
