AOC touts 'new era' for NYC at Mamdani inauguration

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) touted a “new era for New York City” Thursday at the inauguration of fellow progressive New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“This ascent marks a new era for New York City, led by a historic new mayor in Zohran Mamdani, guided by his dedication to a working class that makes our beautiful city run,” Ocasio-Cortez said in opening remarks at Mamdani’s public swearing-in on New Year’s Day.
Mamdani was sworn in as the city’s 112th mayor in a private ceremony early Thursday at an abandoned subway station near City Hall in Manhattan. His public oath of office is set to be administered by another major national progressive figure, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
The former New York State Assembly member and democratic socialist defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in November to secure the mayoralty. He is the first Muslim to lead the nation’s largest city.
