5 dead, 2 injured after carbon monoxide alert in Missouri

Five people are dead after officials responded to a carbon monoxide alert in Phelps County Friday morning.

According to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, firefighters with the Rolla Rural Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide alert at a duplex east of Rolla at around 5:25 a.m.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found five people dead on one side of the duplex and one person with critical injuries. Responders also found one person with moderate injuries on the opposite side of the duplex, according to Phelps County deputies.

Rolla Rural firefighters and Phelps County deputies safely removed the victims from the duplex and secured the area for further investigation.

During the operation, a deputy was exposed to carbon monoxide and was treated by Phelps Health EMS.
