Khamenei and members of his family were killed on February 28 during U.S.-Israeli strikes at the beginning of the war, bringing an end to his 36-year rule over Iran. A multi-city state funeral will be held over six days before his body is laid to rest on July 9, in his hometown of Mashhad, Iran. Israel has shared intelligence with the United States about a new Iranian plot to assassinate President Donald Trump, sources told CNN.

According to a separate source, the U.S. had already been tracking a steady stream of intelligence regarding potential plots against Trump over recent weeks. However, the warning from Israel was distinct, providing new details about a specific threat, according to the outlet.

The exact nature of this plot remains unclear, as did whether U.S. intelligence had independently uncovered it, said CNN.

President Trump confirmed the threats on Wednesday while he was talking to reporters during the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

“They want to take out the U.S. leader, me,” Trump told reporters. “I’m on every list. I saw this morning, I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long.”

The alleged plot follows the U.S. announcing airstrikes had resumed against Iran on Wednesday.

On Saturday, crowds gathering in Mashhad for the beginning of the former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s multi-day funeral procession after he was killed in an Israeli strike on Tehran on February 28th.

A sea of black-clad mourners filled the roads leading to the shrine, chanting slogans demanding revenge against Trump for the religious leader’s death.

Mobs of people even chanted the decades-old revolutionary slogan, ‘Death to America.’

U.S. officials prepared for potential military strikes Thursday night but chose to pursue diplomacy instead, CNN said.

The outlet further reported that earlier on Thursday, addressing the thousands of personnel on board the USS Abraham Lincoln, Commanding Officer Captain Dan Keeler explicitly told his crew that tensions with Iran were intensifying.
