(NewsNation) — Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is set to meet with ranchers in Texas who live and work along the southern border to see where things stand.

Noem is also expected to announce the rollout of new national security technology that will likely help with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement in the future. Customs and Border Protection Chief Michael Banks is also expected to participate in a news conference on Wednesday.

Bill Martin, a rancher from Carrizo, Texas, near the U.S.-Mexico border, tells NewsNation that compared to a year ago, he has seen a 180-degree difference at the border in terms of crime, as break-ins on his property aren’t as prevalent.

Martin told NewsNation on Wednesday that before President Donald Trump took office in January, break-ins at his ranch were almost a daily occurrence. He said that he has also had fences cut and vehicles driven through fences by people he characterized as armed drug mules.

He called the break-ins anywhere from mildly irritating to downright dangerous.

However, Martin said some of his employees at the ranch have still encountered armed cartel members, and he also still doesn’t go anywhere without a gun for protection. He is one of many ranchers who have said they feel unsafe with cartels inching closer to their property.

He said DHS has installed monitors across his property that trigger other technology if activity is detected along the fence line that has created issues with break-ins over the past four years.

“It’s changed completely now,” Martin told NewsNation.
